took this picture during some days i stayed in arcachon, france.
i love this beach, hanging with the nature, exploring the beach life.
what this picture made special for me is showing the sea without actually showing it.
the light was incredibly beautiful.

Kieler Woche // Kiel Week

January 25th, 2015 by sophie · baltic sea, germany, ocean, water

The Kiel Week is an annual event since the end of the 19th century. The sailing regatta is one of the biggest sailing events in the world. Even though the Kiel Week became more and more into a fair, the focus still is on the sailing competitions.Besides that there are over 2.000 events, mostly live music, which are offered to the visitors.

The maritime highlight of the Kiel Week is the so called Windjammerparade. Since 1998 this parade is always on saturday during the festival week. Over 100 tall and and traditional ships, historical steamboats and hundreds of sailing yachts participate in the regatta. There are also numerous sail training and naval ships of other countries attending.

Traditionally the ending of the Kiel Week is the fireworks Sternenzauber at the Fjörde of the Kiel harbor.

4/2015 Image of the Week: seal at the baltic sea

January 23rd, 2015 by sophie · animals, baltic sea, germany, image of the week, nature, ocean, photography

That day I was supposed to catch up with my friend Ines and visit the Flügger Lighthouse. But this little friend prevented us from going. Seals are very special in the baltic sea, so I am very happy, that I witnessed it hanging out at the nature reserve at Fehmarn.

Soundtrack of my Life: Ben Howard – Esmeralda

November 12th, 2014 by sophie · music, ocean, soundtrack of my life

This songs is very special to me, cause watching the the music video ensured me on the choice to write my master thesis about people and their passion for the sea.
The song touched my heart, so I wanted to share it with you! Check out the video!

Ben Howard – Esmeralda

Oh, blinded now I see that I
Could not hold you
My orange tree left in the darkened
Room for three of us to share.

Oh maybe you were free before my
Blackened wind covered you
I took the sing from your song
I made a bed,
Where you don’t belong.

Oh pull me, she fell beneath the wheels to help me up.
Black Sea, I failed to be the light you found in love.
Oh pull me, she fell beneath the wheels to help me up.
Black Sea, the monster killed the melody you loved.

Now I’m going places on my own.

Blinded now I see the death
Moves amongst us,
And with such ease arrived
To surround us.
These silent beasts are hard to bear.

Lonely, oh no not me
I have a grave to dig.
Fast moving feet, you gave me light
Where it once was gone
I made a bed,
Where you don’t belong.

Oh pull me, she fell beneath the wheels to help me up.
Black Sea, I failed to be the light you found in love.
Oh pull me, she fell beneath the wheels to help me up.
Black Sea, the monster killed the melody you loved.

Now I’m going places on my own.

big sur – music to my ears

June 14th, 2014 by nina · california, ocean, reportage, usa

big sur – what a magical name for a place. in spanish sur means south. so big sur sounded always like the big south to me, the magical place where the summer has its home.
on my last weekend in california my friends and i took a road trip down the coast to monterey, carmel and big sur.
we drove down the highway 1 to monterey and took the 17 mile drive to see the coast and the lone cypress.

the weather was rough and cloudy. it was a windy road and took us about an hour to see everything we wanted. while driving further on highway 1 to big sur passing the bixby bridge the sun broke through the clouds. this bridge was opened in 1932 and is with 98 meters/ 320 feet still one the worlds tallest single-span concrete bridges.
in big sur we just had one destination. pfeiffer beach. it is weird to drive 157 miles to see a beach. but it was so worth it.
pfeiffer beach is just magical. it was one of the windiest days during my stay and the sand got whipped around our legs, arms and faces but the sun was shining and the waves were beautiful. and my undefined feeling about the name big sur finally has a picture.
on our way back we pulled over to watch another monet-like sunset.
we stopped in carmel to find a place where we could eat but since it was saturday the restaurants were crowded by the well-off tourists who stayed in carmel. it looks like a friendly small town with lights in the trees and a lot of people on the streets.

Krummsteert // Fehmarn // Baltic Sea

April 23rd, 2014 by sophie · baltic sea, germany, nature, ocean, photography

I spent five weeks in Wallnau, a place on the island Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea. Wallnau is a waterbird reservat, hosted by the NABU. I worked there with a lot of wonderful people which i have taken in my heart. There are two outposts, one is called Grüner Brink, the other one is the Krummsteert, an esker that the sea has shaped for a long time. The Krummsteert is a nature protection zone, there are no visitors allowed to enter it. Its a very important area for breeding birds. I was privileged to visit the Krummsteert to take photographs. It is very impressing to stand on a small strip of land, the sea on my left and on my right side, surrounded by sea birds. The nature is very untouched and I did every step carefully, trying to not destroy something. The light was beautiful and I felt very close to the nature. It was very special and meant a lot to me. So here are some of my shots, I hope you will like it!
